Ugh.

Luckily for me, the John and Teyla thing-a-thon just ended and [info]liviapenn made these pretties for me with funny commentary to boot :) Man, I really needed those laughs (even if I do feel a little guilty to be receiving stuff after I dropped out of the exchange).

I used to like PERN novels when I was a teen. I picked one up today, only to discover about a hundred pages in, after having had a second look at the cover, that it's written by a Todd McCaffrey and not Ann McCaffrey.

Okay, so he's her son. That still makes it perilously close to published fanfiction in my book. But then most of the PERN novels read like fanfiction, so who am I kidding? I'm enjoying this thing thoroughly :P

I accidentally punched myself in the eye last night. It's really embarassing to have to explain that to concerned people. Pretty sure most of them don't believe me lol.

I really don't understand how you can just walk up to someone and start a conversation with them that assumes they heard a bunch of previous conversations that they couldn't possibly have. There's a person at work who keeps doing that. Today, when I had to repeatedly ask her what she was talking about, she got angry at me for not paying enough attention.

Well, guess what. It's really difficult to pay attention to conversations that you never participated in and weren't aware occured in the first place. Bitch.

I swear the next time this happens I'm going to blow a fuse.

I need prompts like, now.

Teyla/Keller (gen or femslash) trouble offworld type things. Please, please, someone take pity on me.

Bumped into a friend at the bookshop today.

Me: Hi! How're you doing? *kisses hello*
Her: Hi! You'll never guess what happened to me last week. I nearly died!
Me: ...

There was a flood and my friend drove her car into a puddle that was a lot deeper than she thought. She got rescued by a policeman who knew her by name because he'd given her 3 speeding tickets on that very same road before. Weird stuff is always happening to her.

I can't get over the fact that she nearly drowned in an effing flood while I was at home going on about how good that rain was going to be for the lawn.

Weird conversation #2:

Brother #1: Mechanics are full of crap.
Brother #2: Indeed.
Mom: Hey, what happened to that series? The one with that guy who kept saying "indeed" and looking at people in a funny way. I miss him!
Brother #2: IT GOT CANCELLED.
Mom: D:

It always amazes me that she can get attached to little details like "indeed" but not remember the name of the series (everything from Star Trek to BSG gets called Star Wars). I wonder what it'd be like to navigate fandom by labelling things that way.

Fic: The ring that takes you to other planets.
Fandom: Star Wars
Characters: That guy with the hair, the guy with the lemon thing, the girl with sticks, that other guy with the hair and the tattoos.
Pairings: Yes.
Summary: They go to another planet and get into trouble because of the cylons. No wait, duplicators.

"Lost" has this inexplicable ability to irritate the fuck out of me while at the same time keeping me sort of morbidly fascinated.

I had to rewatch the first couple of eps yesterday due to a family member who hadn't watched it yet.

And I must say, banana-leaf airplane, wtf. It's almost impossible to make one of these without using some sort of cutting instrument. Why would Jack go to all these lengths just for an example? Why am I paying too much attention to stupid details?

Also, I love Sawyer. But I personally would have lol'd if he'd gotten run over by the carcass of that bear because the guy apparently believes it's wise to STAND IN THE MIDDLE OF ITS PATH and shoot at it as if the bullets were extra bear-charge-stopping caliber. Man!

And I hate Kate. I wish she had been played by a competent actress.

I've got an idea for a Stargate SG-1/Discworld crossover fic worming its way through my mind. Someone restrain me before I land myself on fanficrants!

Does anyone else think that Vimes and O'Neill have some striking similarities? Oh lord, stop me now.

All signed up for [info]sgabigbang! And [info]greenconverses is going to be my partner in crime, which I'm really excited about. We've already been through the prompts and let me tell you internets, two minds are definitely better than one.

I've also got to get writing on the [info]gate_womenfic. The idea's been at the back of my mind for so long I'm slightly afraid I'm going to forget some parts.

I haven't been keeping up with the fic reading recently and from the looks of my inbox, it seems there's been quite a flood on the John/Teyla side of things. Argh, I must keep away from [info]sg_rarepairingsor it's going to suck up all of my spare time.

Also saw The Last Man, and as [info]jessm78said, I don't have too much to be afraid about concerning similarity with a fic I was writing. On the other hand, I don't have an excuse to not write the fic of doom anymore :)

1. Teyla by omadesala (contains John/Teyla but not excessively shippy)
Summary: Set to the French song "Je suis une femme de couleur", this vid focuses on Teyla and her origins.
Why I like it: Because the song is Teyla, and not because it proclaims that "je suis une femme de couleur" ("I am a woman of colour"), but because it speaks of origins and embracing a new people (represented in the vid by John) without forgetting one's roots.
Some lines:
"I am a woman of colour, I come from where the sun shines, where people speak to each other with their heart."
"Keep at the bottom of your memory who you are, where you come from."

2. Hey There Delilah by Hiroma12 (no ships, but a lot of... confusion)
Summary: A litte story told in subtitles.
Why I like it: I won't bother to explain - just wait for Sheppard's reaction shots and you'll know why I laughed myself silly.

3. John and Teyla - Memory by foolofatook1106 (shippy)
Summary: According to the vidder, "Sheyla-Basically John thinking about Teyla"
Why I like it: Well, this season has been pretty ouch for John in terms of his relationship with Teyla. With an excellent choice of song, this vid manages to convey that pain while maintaining a deceptively calm/cheerful surface. I like when it goes "Hello again, it's you and me, kinda always like it used to be" because, no. It's not how it always used to be and that makes the pain worse.

May I recommend that you read this fic as an accompaniment? (Warning for heartbreak - I mean yours.)

4. SGA Crack!Vid - Bad Touch by mercsire (not shippy, but I wouldn't call it gen...)
Summary: Crack! That's all you need to know.
Why I like it: Good antidote for angst. And, let's face it, I like the Asgard when they're devious. Srsly.

5. Anon vs Scientology: Message to Anonymous from the Voiceless by voiceless7526
Yes, I just sneaked an Anon-related vid in here. If some of you have been following the progress of the 'raids', this vid might interest you.

A while ago I made a post about how my favourite SGA vids were very McShep-centered. And then I proceeded to describe the John/Teyla vids as, and I quote: "mushy and angsty and... ugh"

As we all know, the universe runs on irony and lulz, so in the following weeks I remembered or discovered a whole lot of vids that disprove this statement. [Also, I'm limited by being able to view vids on YouTube only.]

So, here are some of my favourite non-McShep vids:

1. Beautiful Liar by Quania2004.

Description: Elizabeth and Teyla are having some Sheppard problems.
Why I like it: a.) It has a sense of humour. b.) In my mind at least, it is commenting on the divide between
the Sparky fans and the Sheyla (sorry, [info]greenconverses !) fans and saying, why don't we all get along? And why don't we whump Sheppard a little as we're at it?  c.) It has brilliant editing and in one fantastic scene, syncs up the rhythm of the bantos rods with the beat of the music.

2. No Sleep Tonight by teryliciouskatie.

Description: Teyla spells it out for the person she's after.
Why I like it: Some interesting choices of footage are made ( Watch out for the "But you seem to be... a little oblivious"). The song used brings out a straightforward and confident Teyla, avoiding the angst and short-circuiting years of beating around the bush shipwise.

3. Atlantis: The Crystal Village by Herternic.

Description: Yup, it appears to be a Sparky vid. But you can do like me and read it gen.
Why I like it: Considering recent plot developments in the series, the choice of song here is extremely pertinent and brings out the nostalgia by the bucketful. Seriously, everytime the line "You were there - it was good in the beginning" comes around, I shiver a little. Because I can easily imagine Sheppard struggling to adapt to the changes in leadership and thinking back to the good old days when Weir was around and the shit hadn't quite gotten around to juxtaposing itself with the fan.

4. Teyla. Woman are warrior too (sic) by Athosionwarrior.

Description: Uh, Teyla kicks ass to kickass music?
Why I like it: See description. It starts powerfully and spends the entire time painting an image of Teyla that I am very partial to, while acknowledging that she is more than just a warrior ( a woman, a lover, etc). Also, some nice editing (check out the Michael bit that coincides with a very otherworldly whine in the music).

There are more but I haven't bookmarked them so I had already forgotten them by the time I decided to make the post. *facepalm*

- Oh, and an SG-1 one:

5. Want by calleaveda.

Description:
Sam/Daniel vid.
Why I like it: Because it is brilliant. This person took extracts from a Sam/Jack episode and told a Sam/Daniel story with it.

Facepalm edit: So, by now, you may have gathered the very accurate impression that I fail at HTML. Could someone teach me how to put in an lj user without breaking the post?

Characters: Teyla and Rodney mostly
Pairings: None
Summary: Teyla and Rodney have a plan that involves explosives and escapes in the nick of time.
Disclaimer: Not mine, don't sue.
A/N: Written for the 12 Days of Teyla. Not my best work, I'm afraid. I've been exceptionally fic-challenged for the last few weeks :-(

Title: My Kingdom For A ZPM, But I'd Settle For A Bicycle
Category: Crackfic, humour
Pairings: None, but there are hints of John/Teyla
Spoilers: None
Summary: Sheppard does something he shouldn't have again and lands himself and Teyla in some trouble of the can't-find-the-stargate variety.
Note: Written for [info]amatheladuring the [info]sga_santastory exchange.

Extract: "If there was such a thing as a list of bad ideas for Gate travelers, stepping into an innocuous-looking stone circle would be approximately number 17 on the list, right after criticizing the fashion sense of a Goa'uld and somewhere before pressing mysterious red buttons not previously cleared by the resident archaeologist/linguist/designated common-sense person."

Ulysses, Fallen: Cadman/McKay, PG-13

Okay, so I don't usually make recs because I don't have much of a readership but this fic has less of a readership than it probably deserves because, to be honest, the beginning is easily confused with that of a very bad fic.

And while it could seriously have used a beta (yeah, I shouldn't be talking) this story is mysterious to a degree that I enjoyed immensely. The second half takes a sudden turn into the downright cryptic, with elements that increase the scope of the fic without ever giving very much away.

Okay, I suck at making recs. Read it, you might be pleasantly surprised if you like mysteries.

Confession of the day: I like to watch John/Rodney vids on YouTube.

This may seem odd from someone who is, let's admit it, slightly allergic to the pairing (but totally on board with the friendship). But I have an excuse for this hypocritical behaviour: some of the best SGA vids on the site are McShep. And I am a sucker for clever editing and the kind of music the slashers tend to favour. (Why, oh why, must most of the J/T choices in music be so damn mushy and angsty and... ugh?)

Anyway, having recently had to explain the meaning of 'slash' to my dear mother when she accidentally stumbled across a Legolas/Aragorn vid of piteous quality, I decided to show her this vid as an example of how it's done.

I fear I may have created a monster. I spent 10 minutes this morning listening to what sounds suspiciously like a fangirly squeegasm from my own mother. She wants MOAR links. *goes off to die*

*resuscitates*

In other news, [info]stargazercmchas put up a seriously awesome SGA vid here. Whoever made that deserves to win the internetz, let alone the contest they're participating in.

Also, I had no idea that secret santa fic exchanges were so fun :D
